Babcock has been awarded a prestigious Gold Achievement Award
for its high level of health and safety management, in the RoSPA
Occupational Health and Safety Awards 2011.
Babcock is the UK's largest nuclear site management, engineering
and support services organisation, with a workforce of some 3,500
skilled employees in the civil nuclear sector operating at all
levels across tiers 1, 2 and 3. The company runs five UK nuclear
licensed sites and provides services spanning the full lifecycle
from design and build, through operation and maintenance, to
decommissioning and remediation. Safety and quality are paramount
in every aspect of Babcock's work, which is reinforced by its 'Home
Safe Every Day' policy.
To gain the Gold Achievement Award, Babcock had to demonstrate
successful performance in areas such as director/senior manager
commitment to leading safety management throughout the
organisation, involvement of the workforce in health and safety
management, and how the company ensures that all employees and
contractors are fully competent in this area. It also had to
provide evidence showing that health and safety is fully integrated
into business planning processes, that health and safety
information is effectively communicated, and performance actively
monitored and reviewed. Additionally, the organisation's approach
to investigating any health and safety problems and implementation
of lessons learnt had to be demonstrated, along with provision of
examples of notable achievements.
Babcock has been awarded the Gold Award in recognition of its
excellent occupational health and safety management systems,
rigorous approach to occupational health, and high levels of
compliance with control measures for principal risks.
Commenting on the award, Babcock Managing Director Nuclear,
Roger Hardy, said: "We place a very high priority on safety
throughout the organisation and seek to set high standards, so we
are delighted to have this recognised with the RoSPA Gold
Achievement Award.
"Babcock's nuclear business has acquired and integrated a number
of leading nuclear organisations in recent years, and those
companies have won numerous awards over previous years. We are
proud of our safety record, and continue to work hard to ensure it
is maintained. Gaining a Gold Award in our first year as an
integrated business is an excellent achievement."
David Rawlins, RoSPA's awards manager, said: "RoSPA firmly believes
that organisations that have demonstrated their commitment to
continuous improvement in accident and ill health prevention
deserve recognition. Babcock has shown that it is committed to
striving for such continuous improvement and we are delighted to
honour it through the presentation of an award."
The Gold Achievement Award will be presented to Babcock's Assurance
Programme Co-Coordinator, Amanda Linnett, at the RoSPA Occupational
Health and Safety Awards Ceremony on 18 May in Birmingham.
